Start the school year with connection, creativity, and meaningful memories
Hi, I’m Janice, the creator and artist behind Hamletta Studios.
At Hamletta Studios, I believe intentional living doesn’t have to boring. It can be joyful, creative, and full of personality.
Through journaling, planning, and a splash of playful art, I help you slow down, reflect, and design a life you truly love.
I create stickers, printables, and illustrated tools to help you bring more intention and joy into your routines.
Today I’m sharing a set of journaling prompts for families to use during the first week of school.
Whether you're homeschooling or sending your kids back into the classroom, these prompts are a simple way to check in and reflect together.
Back-to-school brings a lot of pressure to once again, get the school year right.
I reflect back on things that could have gone better last year and brainstorm how I can make it better this coming year.
I know my mind is running a million miles a minute trying to prepare the “perfect” school year ahead.
I know there’s no such thing as perfect but I do try my best to give my family the best schooling experience.
With preparing for the school year, there are lots of emotions, lots of tasks and planning, lots of money being spent signing up for after school and extracurricular activities.
How do I know? I’m right there with you.
There is so much planning leading up to back-to-school.
It is so easy to let living intentionally go by the wayside when there’s a whirlwind of changes happening at home as the household transitions from summer to school.
One way to slow things down and create intentional moments as a family is to journal!
In order to live intentionally, we must take steps to be mindful and take a breath to savor the moments that can be fleeting.
These seven prompts are designed to help you connect with your kids and yourself through quick, reflective, and creative journaling.
They’re simple enough to squeeze in at breakfast or bedtime and meaningful enough to become a memory-making tradition.
This gentle reminder invites you to be grounded, flexible, and kind to yourself and your family.
Let this affirmation guide your journaling time and your daily rhythm.
This season, I choose presence over perfection. |
7 Family Journal Prompts for Back to School Season
7 Family Journal Prompts for Back to School Season
Day 1: What’s something you’re excited about this week?
Start the week with some positivity! This can be anything—making a new friend, using a cool pencil case, even having mac and cheese for lunch.
Parent tip: Share your own answer too! It models openness and shows kids that adults have hopes too.
Day 2: What’s something that made you proud today?
This could be a moment of bravery, kindness, or just getting through something tough.
Encourages kids (and adults!) to notice their own growth. It’s not about perfection—it’s about recognizing effort and resilience.
Tip: Let each family member share something about the other person they were proud of too. Try drawing a little badge or ribbon to go along with your proud moment!
Day 3: How did you help someone or how did someone help you?
Prompts empathy, gratitude, and noticing the goodness in everyday moments. For younger kids, give examples: “Did you share crayons? Did a friend help you zip your coat?”
Day 4: What was tricky or hard today, and how did you handle it?
Acknowledging challenges builds emotional resilience and trust. This is a great prompt to use at bedtime when kids might feel safe to share.
Day 5: Draw or describe your favorite moment from the week.
Give kids the freedom to illustrate or narrate their answer—no rules! Add stickers, washi tape, or doodles to make it extra fun.
Day 6: What’s one thing you remember from last school year, and how can we make this year even better?
Encourages reflection, learning from experience, and setting intentions. For younger kids, offer examples like, “Last year, mornings felt rushed. How can we make them calmer?” or “We loved Friday movie nights. Should we bring them back?”
Day 7: What does our family do that makes you feel safe and loved?
End the week with a prompt that brings everything home—literally.
Bonus idea: Turn this answer into a family motto or poster for the fridge!

I’ve turned these prompts into a cute, free printable so you can use them in your journal, planner, or even cut into cards for a little “pick-a-prompt” game.
Perfect for bedtime reflections or quiet mornings!
3 Benefits of Family Journaling
Journaling together as a family might sound like extra work, but it’s actually a simple way to connect with your family. Here are three reasons why it’s worth giving a try:
1. Better Communication
When everyone takes a few minutes to share their thoughts and feelings, it opens up new ways to talk and listen. Kids get practice putting their emotions into words, and parents get a peek into what’s really going on.
2. Builds Emotional Skills
Journaling helps everyone recognize and understand their feelings, which is a huge part of growing up (and being human!). It teaches empathy, patience, and how to handle tricky emotions more calmly.
3. Creates Meaningful Memories
Looking back on your family journals down the road will remind you of the little moments—the funny, sweet, and sometimes messy stuff—that make your family unique. It’s like capturing a snapshot of your lives, together.
Your Family Story Starts Here
Back-to-school doesn’t have to be a nonstop rush. Just a few minutes a day can give you space to connect, get creative, and find some calm. Even if you only do one or two prompts, you’re still planting the seeds of a very special practice.
You’re doing an awesome job, and your kids will remember these small, sweet moments way more than you think.
Happy journaling!
